Book Beginnings is a weekly meme hosted by Rose City Reader. We share the first sentence (or so) of the book we are reading, along with our initial thoughts about the sentence, impressions of the book, or anything else the opener inspires.
It was hard to say when exactly winter arrived. The decline was gradual, like that of a person into old age, inconspicuous from day to day until the season became an established, relentless reality.
I've seen this book mentioned many times by travellers and
travel writers. Since I'm trying to get motivated about travel planning -
when travel is an unknown quantity at present - I thought I would
listen to some travel philosophy.
This probably isn't a book I would sit and read from cover to cover, but it would be good to have on the shelf to browse from time to time and dip in and out of.
ReplyDeleteGiven the strange times in which we are all existing right now, those opening lines seem particularly apt, given how much time has passed since this all began, and yet in some ways it only seems like yesterday.
I doubt whether travel abroad will be on our agenda any time soon, in fact if nothing else, this entire debacle has taught us to appreciate what we have on our own doorstep and we no longer have the inclination for wanderlust!

I don't know too much about it. I have the CD audiobook from the library, so I'll probably listen to it straight through, maybe a chapter a day.
DeleteTravel philosophy sounds intriguing, although the opening sentence reminds me of Game of Thrones!
ReplyDeleteLOL! Well, I've never seen Game of Thrones, so I'll take your word for it. The thing about getting an audio book is that you can't flip through it to get a sense of it. We shall see what we shall see!
